It was almost eight when I finally shut down my computer and walked out of my temporary office in the engineering building feeling like I was ready for my day tomorrow. It had been a long day, starting early with that crazy faculty meeting, then a full day of classes and needy students requesting office hours. Plus, I hadn’t slept well last night. All weekend, really. I kept tossing and turning, wondering who’d killed David.

It was a ghost town around campus. Apparently, everyone was heeding the advice that they shouldn’t hang around if they didn’t have a reason to be here. Though it wasn’t that unusual to be quiet at night. There were a few night classes going on but other than that, the students were off doing whatever. Unless there was a sporting event going on; then it was a completely different story. The place was packed on those occasions. Students, faculty, and the community rallied around the major sports teams and even some of the not-so-major. We had an award-winning bowling team, and it drew great crowds.

Not normally one to worry about leaving the building and walking out to the parking lot, I felt a little nervous tonight. While I was fairly certain there wasn’t a serial killer out and about killing off faculty, the lighting at dusk felt a little creepier than normal today.

It didn’t help that the engineering building was on the far edge of campus, away from everything, and was an older section that lacked good outside lighting. My normal building faced the common area, so there were always a few people milling around. It was so lit up at night you could barely tell it was night.

I adjusted the bag on my shoulder and pulled my cardigan a little tighter even though it wasn’t cold. As I walked out to my car and looked over to the Tillman Building, an idea began to form in my mind.

Maybe if I could get into David’s office I might find some clue to who might have hated him enough to commit murder. On the off chance I got caught, I could say I was looking for a book or something I’d lent him. It was semi-plausible. Really, what was the worst that could happen? I’d get yelled at for coming into the building and his office when I knew I wasn’t supposed to. Earlier when Polly and I made the suspect list, I realized how little I knew of David and his relationships outside of the university. Anyone I knew who didn’t like David was a faculty member here, and the animosity was always over something stupid. Maybe poking around his office would give me more insight into his life and therefore his enemies. Then I’d have more people to add to the list. Or maybe I could rule someone out.

I went to my car first to put my bag and purse in, making sure to get my building keys out first, and headed over. Feeling guilty,
